Lead yourself first.
If you can’t lead yourself, how can you lead others? Every management programme we run at Okavango Leadership Academy starts here — three days that build the self before the skill.
Working from the inside out.
This programme builds self-leadership in three steps: first understanding how your own mind works, then building a self you can rely on, and finally learning to live well with and through others.
Each day is built around real, hands-on practice rather than theory. Participants leave each day with something they have already tried — not just something they have discussed.
Built to be practised, not just discussed.
Practical, not theoretical
Every session is built around a live exercise, not a lecture. Participants leave with something practised, not just explained.
A clear progression
Each day builds on the last — moving from self-understanding, to self-mastery, to working well with others.
Real, lasting takeaways
Every day ends with something concrete: a written commitment, a practised habit, a working plan.
The three days in short
A quick summary of each day’s focus — open the full curriculum below for what participants actually do, hour by hour.
Self-Awareness
Understanding the mind: how it protects us, and how that same wiring creates fear, stress, worry, and limiting beliefs.
Private Victory
Building the self you can rely on: clarity, habits, priorities, and resilience.
Public Victory
Living with and through others: trust, listening, collaboration, and feedback.
Day by day
Each day builds directly on the one before it. Open a day below for the exercises participants take part in and what they walk away with.
1
Day One
Self-Awareness — Understanding the mind
Self-Awareness — Understanding the mind
This day is about understanding how the mind works to keep us safe — and how that same protective wiring shows up as fear, stress, worry, and limiting beliefs in everyday life.
What participants do
- Take part in a live activity designed to trigger a real stress response, then unpack what actually happened in their body and mind.
- Identify a personal limiting belief and physically experience the shift from the limiting belief to a reframed one.
- Use a hands-on exercise to separate what they can control from what they can’t, and where to focus their energy instead.
- Practise noticing early physical and emotional signs of stress in the moment.
- Take part in a symbolic release exercise to let go of an unhelpful belief.
Participants will
- Recognise how the mind’s protective instincts show up as fear, stress, worry, and control
- Identify a personal limiting belief and its origin
- Notice physical and emotional signs of stress as they happen
- Practise at least two ways to interrupt an unhelpful thought pattern
Participants leave with
- One personal limiting belief identified and reframed
- A written personal commitment
- Practical tools to notice and interrupt unhelpful thinking in the moment

Day Two
Private Victory — Building the self you can rely on
Private Victory — Building the self you can rely on
This day moves inward: building the clarity, habits, priorities, and resilience needed to become someone you can genuinely rely on.
What participants do
- Get clear on what matters most to them, and put into words the kind of person they want to be.
- Physically step into that future version of themselves and speak from that perspective.
- Design one small, realistic habit and rehearse it live, attached to an existing daily routine.
- Sort real tasks and priorities using a hands-on physical exercise, comparing what’s urgent to what actually matters and gives energy.
- Practise replacing harsh self-talk with a more supportive inner voice, through a live paired exercise.
Participants will
- Put into words what matters most to them and the kind of person they want to be — not just a list of goals
- Design and rehearse one small habit that fits who they want to become
- Apply an energy-aware approach to prioritising their time
- Recognise harsh self-talk and practise a more supportive response
Participants leave with
- A short, personal statement of direction
- One rehearsed habit, ready to start immediately
- A one-page personal plan bringing direction, habit, priorities, and resilience together

Day Three
Public Victory — Living with and through others
Public Victory — Living with and through others
This day turns outward: applying everything built on the first two days to how participants build trust, collaborate, and communicate with the people around them.
What participants do
- Explore what genuinely builds and breaks trust in a working relationship, through a live paired exercise, then practise a real repair conversation.
- Negotiate under genuine constraints in small groups, working toward outcomes that benefit everyone rather than defaulting to compromise.
- Practise listening to truly understand rather than to respond, through a structured paired listening exercise.
- Take part in a hands-on team challenge that only succeeds if the group deliberately uses each person’s different strengths.
- Practise giving and receiving feedback in a structured, low-risk way.
Participants will
- Identify what builds and breaks trust in a real relationship, and practise repairing it
- Apply win-win thinking to a real negotiation under constraints
- Practise listening to understand, and notice its effect compared to normal listening habits
- Experience firsthand how a team achieves more by using each person’s different strengths
- Give and receive feedback using a simple, structured approach
Participants leave with
- A practised approach to repairing trust
- A structured way to give and receive feedback
- A commitment stated publicly, and a follow-through tracker for the weeks ahead
Flexible scheduling
The full programme runs across three days in total. These days don’t need to be delivered back-to-back — they can be scheduled individually to suit your team’s calendar.
The only requirement is that the days are completed in order, since each one builds directly on what came before it:
→
Day 2 · Private Victory
→
Day 3 · Public Victory
